Printful profit margin worksheet
Question: How can sellers estimate POD margin after fulfillment, shipping, returns and marketplace fees?
Short answer
Your print-on-demand margin per order is what the customer pays (item price plus shipping you charge) minus everything it costs you: Printful's product and shipping charges, marketplace and payment fees, any ad cost per order, and an allowance for orders you replace or refund at your own expense. The worksheet below does that math with numbers you enter; it starts blank because your prices and fees are specific to you.
Where to find each number
- Sale price and shipping charged: what you set in your store.
- Printful product cost and shipping: from Printful's product and shipping pages or your order quote.
- Marketplace fee percentage and fixed fee: from your platform's official fees page (for example, Etsy's transaction and listing fees).
- Payment processing: from your platform or payment provider.
- Ad cost per order: total ad spend divided by orders it produced.
- Replacement rate: share of orders you expect to remake or refund at your cost.
How the worksheet calculates
Order revenue is sale price plus shipping charged. Percentage fees are applied to that order revenue, because some platforms (Etsy, for example) charge transaction fees on shipping too; if yours doesn't, adjust the percentage. The replacement allowance is your replacement rate multiplied by the Printful product and shipping cost. Break-even price is the item price at which profit is zero with everything else unchanged.
What it leaves out
- Sales tax or VAT collected and remitted on your behalf.
- Currency conversion fees.
- Monthly subscriptions (store plans, apps, Printful paid plans): divide them by orders and add to fixed fees if you want them included.
- Your time.
Why returns matter here
Printful's Return Policy, as reviewed on October 28, 2026, covers claims found to be Printful's error (such as misprints) but not buyer's remorse returns or size exchanges, which are at the seller's expense. That's why the worksheet includes a replacement allowance.
Is this a good fit for you?
Likely a good fit if
- You sell or plan to sell Printful products.
- You want to test prices before publishing.
Think twice if
- You haven't got real Printful costs yet; get a quote first.
