Etsy listing optimization checklist
Question: How do I evaluate and improve an Etsy listing?
Short answer
Evaluate an Etsy listing in the order a shopper experiences it: does the title say clearly what the item is, does the first photo show the real finished item, does the description answer the obvious questions, are tags and attributes filled in accurately, and are price, shipping and processing time competitive and honest? Fix the weakest part first, then compare results over a few weeks.
1. Title
- Starts with what the item actually is, in words a buyer would search.
- Includes the details that matter for choosing: material, size, style or occasion.
- Reads like a sentence, not a pile of repeated keywords.
2. Photos and video
- First image shows the finished item clearly. For personalized items, Etsy's standards say the first image should show a finished, customized item, not a blank.
- Shows scale, detail, texture and the item in use.
- Uses original photos or video of the real product where Etsy requires it.
3. Description
- Opens with the key facts: what it is, size, materials, what's included.
- Covers care, personalization steps and delivery expectations.
- Discloses production partners or AI use where Etsy requires it.
4. Tags, category and attributes
- Category is the most specific accurate one.
- Attributes such as color, material and occasion are filled in.
- Tags cover different ways people describe the item, without repeating the title word for word.
5. Price, shipping and policies
Check the price covers your costs and Etsy's fees. On October 28, 2026, Etsy's fees page charged its transaction fee on item price plus shipping and gift wrapping, so free shipping baked into the price is still subject to fees. Confirm processing times and return policies are realistic.
Example review
A listing titled "Gift for her necklace cute necklace" with a blank-chain first photo would score low on title and photos. A stronger version: "Personalized gold initial necklace, dainty 14k gold-filled chain", with the first photo showing a finished initial pendant on a model and a close-up second photo.
Is this a good fit for you?
Likely a good fit if
- Your listing gets views but few sales or favorites.
- You're launching a new listing and want a pre-publish check.
Think twice if
- A listing breaks Etsy's standards; fix compliance before optimizing.
Common pitfalls
- Changing everything at once, so you can't tell what helped.
- Stuffing titles with repeated keywords.
- Photos that show a mockup or blank instead of the real item.
- Pricing that forgets fees on shipping.
- Leaving attributes empty.
Listing review scorecard
- Title: clear item name plus key details.
- First photo: finished, real item.
- At least several photos showing scale and detail.
- Description answers size, material, care and delivery.
- Category and attributes complete.
- Tags varied and accurate.
- Price checked against costs and current fees.
- Disclosures (production partner, AI) in place where required.
